Shanna Gutierrez, bass flute

Spindle is an exploration of some of the timbral, registral, and microtonal possibilities afforded by the Eva Kingma open-hole system for bass flute. The axis of the work is a harmonic chaconne embedded in two overlapping rhythmic cycles of different length. Over the course of the piece the musics associated with each cycle trade properties, and ultimately lose track of time. The work was written specially for Shanna Gutierrez and her instrument.
