A cusp is a sharp turn, a point of convergence, or, in the language of calculus, a point on a curve that is continuous but not differentiable. This short piece attempts to take a number of sharp turns without devolving into discontinuity. It was composed on a southern Idaho farm, where morning quail song is infused with sounds of machines marking the encroachment of rural industrial sprawl. This work ultimately served the basis for my Concerto for Jouhikko and Chamber Orchestra
